Smuttynose Brewing is one company that I can say I never tried until this beer, which in a way is nice because I can’t compare it to their other works.  The first thing that drew me to it was the labeling and of course the fact that it was a robust porter.  Since I had never heard of them, but love porters, especially ones like this with 6.6% ABV I thought what the hell? Let”s give it a shot.  So I did.  The results are below.

Pouring it into a glass reveals a dark brown colored liquid that tops off with quite a bit of light beige head.  In the picture above I actually did have the glass titled and poured slowly and It still created quite a thick head.

The smell of this robust porter is pretty solid, nothing too out of the ordinary that I could detect, but I will say there were hints of coffee, roasted malt and a hint of chocolate.  Overall pleasant but nothing out of the ordinary.

The taste, well the taste was a bit more bitter and fruity than I thought it would be.  There were still hints of coffee and roasted malt as well.  It was also a bit dryer then i was expecting but over all it wasn’t bad.

The verdict is that while I like it, I don’t love it.  It’s still a solid above average Porter, but not in my favorites list, I would drink it again, but I wouldn’t go out of my way.  3 out 5 kegs.
