There’s nothing like a maniac giving rise to chaos. Chaos that doesn’t appear to have an end; chaos that shows no signs of slowing down. Sounds inviting, doesn’t it? Well, when you have someone as unscrupulous as Kai, you can bet he has no qualms about putting society through the wringer. In fact, he thrives on doing so; thus, the scenes that depict the spread of Ebola are nothing short of frenzied. Infectees convulse to the nth degree only for onlookers to observe, with no way to curtail the madness. Although it’s unsurprising that a madman is spreading a disease at a rapid rate, the fact that he does couldn’t be more apparent.
I can’t help but think of the scene in which Kei and Kai observe the Zulu ceremony. It’s lively as well as visually stimulating, what with the close-ups of sick tribespeople and portrayals of ritualistic dancing. It’s quite the contrast to the scenes that depict people convulsing. In that respect, the tribespeople have a different view of death that they express in their own way. I think that’s interesting. It goes to show that although the Zulu don’t rely on modern medicine, they’re aware of the severity of Ebola and the toll it takes on its victims. If only the city dwelling doctors had thought to pay them a visit.
This film is extreme in many ways. The blood that Kai sheds is a testament to that, as are the means by which he prepares African cha siu bao. It may look tasty, but boy, are the ingredients as appealing as expired filet de boeuf. That doesn’t seem to bother the customers; in fact, they don’t think twice about taking a bite. If they only knew the tricks that Kai had up his twisted sleeve. That’d be a surprise if there ever was one. Nonetheless, the murderous maniac’s comeuppance is just what the doctor ordered. Who would’ve thought that charred flesh with a side of bullets would make for an ideal remedy?
Ebola Syndrome is without a doubt a disgusting film, so unless you have a strong stomach, you may wanna think twice about feasting your eyes on it while enjoying your snack of choice. Then again, you may find that the flavor is enhanced by sadistic violence and sexual perversion. I’ll let you be the judge of that.
